Default Flexible fiber shield thing under engine

When installing my extra lights, the flexible fiberboard engine compartment shield thingy under the engine was in my way, and I had to move it temporarily to get behind the bumper properly. Its back in place now, but I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to completely remove it. what ill effects might occur if I took it off.

What is it actually called anyway?

Thanks
-Kevin

I think it's called mud guard. It protects the alternator a bit when taking very muddy roads. I don't have anything left of this guard and no problems whatsoever.

i figured it was to protect stuff from flying debris or other things, but I couldn't think what needed much protecting.. Thanks, I no longer feel bad about removing it!
