Sounds like a bad ground or a corroded connector somewhere.

All the other electrical systems work great.Does anyone know if there is a ground in the rear, under the hood seems fine.

The brake lights are grounded neat the light units, inside the rear fenders. You can remove the rear light units and by inspection find out which part should be grounded (the part that connects to the outer metal part of the bulbs. Then you can just make a new ground to that part. You can use clip leads (wires with alligator clips on them; you can get them at Radio Shack) to try out your repair before making a permanent one.
You might even be able to see where the fault is, but there's nothing wrong with adding another ground, as long as you ground the right part.
Good luck

You have to remove the whole tail light assembly and look at the back of it. All the light bulbs will have a ground; all the grounds will go to the same place.
On G. M trucks with the push-in lights I had a lot of trouble with the plastic part of the sockets melting and creating a bad connection where the bulbs plug in. You might take a look at that.

Fixed them, the cheap plastic light sockets were cracked and when the bulbs are pushed in the connectors pushed in and no contact.Got a set of replacement lights off e-bay for 60 bucks, cheaper than the ticket....
