I have recently purchased my MJ ('87 LWB 4X4) automatic, for $1800.
I have named him, "Blue Moon"....LOL...Blue for the obvious and Moon as I am originally from Miami and thirdly cuz I simply luv 'da song...
It has some problems, but by previewing 60 pages of your posts, I have tackled some and will work on the others as my ole bod, time and $ allow.
I wish to thank all here who have kindly aided one another and "newbies" the the 4x4 world like me. I will try to do my part in helping anyone I am able and look forward to interacting with all here. Thx again, Wolf.
Oh, I also luv Harleys. Been riding bikes almost 50 yrs.
I've always wanted a "JEEP" and now I R 1.. hear from y'all soon.
An '87 originally had a BA10 if its a manual 5-speed. But after 21 years of good use something may have been replaced or upgraded. If so, you probably have an AX15. It's supposed to be the better one, but my '88 BA still hasn't exploded.
The sig can be made in your profile. If you want to post pics, first you have to put them on the internet via sites like ImageShack® - Image Hosting. With the help of NIX, my tagline contains info on "BLUE" and also with the aid of NIX, my photo is now my Avatar. I hope I can be here for any others troubles and/or questions. THX again "NIX" and XJY123.
Nice looking MJ.....you said that it has the tow package. 1987 XJs and MJs had optional Dana 44 rear axles; check it out you may have one. Your AW-4 auto is a good transmission. My 96 XJ has one; think about adding a transmission cooler if your Comanche doesn't have one.
I might get flak for saying so but I'd change out the fan clutch; I think that the 'spin and guess the stiffness of the clutch' test can be subjective.
My son, Chris, is a combat engineer currently an E-5 and is stationed in Okinawa. He's been to Fallujah twice and Al Assad once; he got back to Okinawa last March and my wife and I spent the better part of 3 weeks visiting him there.

My MJ is full of odd electical gremlins...
with my new hotwired elec fan and new '04 radiator...all's cool now.
rear tailites are veryyyy weird...
with ign sw off...blinkers work
with ign sw on...right rear does not blink and dash indicator lit solid
with ign sw on and truck running....rear rear does NOT blink and left alternates with top and bottom lite
with 4way emergency flashers(light sw off) left rear lites dimmer than right
no front left turn light PERIOD..will ck bulb and connector
GREMLINS abound...
Changed all fluids...found rear diff had no fluid!
will check for tanny coller.....don't believe it has one.
need new exhaust mani gasket....mani itself looks ok....i.e. cracks, etc.
fuel gauge...is a joke...reads.....way beyone full...then drops to 1/8 tank.
oh well wadda I expect for such a cheap price?
wish they made an extended cab....tiny seats and no legroom for a 6'4" guy like me
thx again all...see ya later...it's the witching hour and off to bed 4 me.
The bulbholders can be quite bad sometimes Check or clean them, or replace them when electrical connections are corroded through.
I'm afraid you need to check wires and connectors going to the back. Is the connector for the trailer fed by wires that are simply spliced from the wires behind the taillights? Remove the taillightsw and check the condition of the wires. I would replace the wires and connections going to the trailer connector. Could be there's some kind of short in there. Buy a multimeter and check the resistance in the wires that go from front to rear. Not a nice job, but it will show which wire causes troubles. Wires can be bad, isolation can be bad, connectors can be bad.
And sometimes simply making good grounds solves everything.
Yep, this board was so much more alive in the old days, but some die hards still post here now and then.
