Default Need Help on engine compatibility Jeep 4.0L

Hello, new here and wanted to first say hello. Now thats out of the way I have a problem. I bought a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a rod knock for cheap, I am having trouble tracking down an engine. The 99 Grand Cherokee has the Coil pack not distributor setup, so every motor I find that is a 99 has Distributor not coil. Will this motor accept the crank position sensor in place of the Distributor? I have also heard that a 97,98 4.0L engine will also fit, are the motor mount locations the same? PLEASE help, I have been searching for over a week on compatibility of these engines and have found no definite answers.

Mechanically, I believe they are going to be the same. Look down on the right side where the dist 'would' be and I'm sure you will see the hole plugged up or something there.

The CPS is at the bell housing at all types. It regulates the ignition timing and injector timing. Do you perhaps mean the cam sensor in the older types distributor? This one makes sure the CPS is not 360 degrees wrong.

If you want to be sure, pull your Cam sensor and make a pic. It would surprise me if something was different in the gear inside the engine.

Mechanically they should be the same but will the motor mounts be in the same location?

anything before 99 will not be compatible to your grand. head, intake, hoses, waterpump, acc locations are all different. your best bet is to find a 99 or newer motor.

Are you positive? I have heard from a few sources that it will fit with my intake and exhaust manifolds, and all my accessories. What is the major difference in heads?
