Actually it does have a very complete off road package with low range 19:1, skid plates, tow hooks, 17" off road tires, hill descent control, off road brake traction control, +1" ground clearance, heavy duty oil and trans coolers, and a big pile of other stuff. The engine is 2.4 4cyl BUT has dual cam 16 valve and makes 170HP. Which is probably more than my worn out XJ has.
Actually, it is a quite nice package and deserves some consideration.

C'mon, compared to a XJ a Patriot is pretty

My 1996 XJ SE (with AW-4/NP231) has a crawl ratio of 29:1 (2.80 first x 2.72 low range x 3.73 axle); even larger if you consider the effect of the torque convertor at low speeds. Since I installed the transmission cooler last year, the Cherokee can tow 5000 lbs.; a SE could tow 3000 completely unmodified. The Patriot with all the bells and whistles tow package can tow 2000lbs., according to the Jeep website.

Notice also that Jeep does not list horsepower and torque ratings @ RPM for the 2.4 I-4. I think the 4.0L has a lot more low end and mid range torque.

There is an old adage that is apropriate to use when speaking of engines.

"The candle that burns the brightest, also burns the shortest (refering to time)"

In order to make a small engine perform as well or even attempt to come anywhere close to the larger displacement, you have to "Turn up the flame", so the life expectancy for the smaller engine, under the same use as the larger, will always be less. You get nothing for free.

They just went to a more "yuppy" platform to sell to all the city dwellers.

I'll take my 1990 4.0 over any of the new junk from Daimler/cryco/sell-out-traitors-losers

"Did I say that?"

I am at the point that wish I had my CJ7 back. The real Jeep.
Remember that I started with a WWII MJ salvaged from the North African campaign. Basic, no problems, no electronics, went everywhere it had to, never complained. (Jeez, starting to sound like my Samurai). If my XJ hadn't been plagued with so many problems, I never would have found this board.
I do agree with KRABY about the citified Patriot. But life goes on. XJ is retired.
Now we have to consider future options.

Well, I know I'm coming into this conversation late, but I just joined the group.

Hello everyone!

Anyway, I have never owned a ZJ or an XJ, but I now own a 2007 Patriot (MK) & so far, I like it. I also have a CJ-8 for weekend fun, but I like the idea of a daily commuter vehicle that still has at least some off-road capability, so I bought the Patriot.

Actually, I have been on the lookout for some aftermarket parts to increase it's off-road capacity, but so far I haven't found much. Does anyone know of any, or if possibly some parts made for the Liberty or other vehicles would work with little or no extra modification?

I suppose I could go completely custom, but I know how expensive that can get.

Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions appreciated!

Oh, and are there any other MK owners in here?

Hello and Welcome!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but in 2wd mode the Patriot (and the Compass) is front wheel drive??

If that's true then I would think that any rear rear drive Jeep parts would be very difficult to put in a Patriot piecemeal. You might be able to swap in another model Jeep entire drivetrain and axles, also with great difficulty, but why would you do that to a brand new Jeep?

In any case, Good Luck with your new Jeep!!

PS. Just because I don't think a Patriot is as good off road as a XJ doesn't mean I hate them.

Default A real Jeep?

If it is front drive does it qualify to be a Jeep? or is it just a gussied up PT Cruiser?

Yes, it is front wheel drive (in 2wd mode), but I was thinking of some simpler modifications, specifically, adding a winch plate, some underbody protection, probably a little lift & maybe a brushguard.

Also just to be clear, I also think that the XJ's really are more capable off road... because it's true. I just like the Patriot, too, and like I said, primarily it's a daily driver. I just have difficulty leaving things alone. I still want to mod. my wife's Honda Civic to make it off road capable, too, but she'd kill me.

Oh and to, Lionshooter, the Patriot may not be on the same level with an XJ, it is far from being a Neon with a nice suit.
