Default engine swap

Just a quick question, can I swap an engine out of a 91 yj (H.O.??)
into a 89 cherokee? I know I can use the block but can I use the
H.O. intake?
Thanks.
GEE I guess nobody feels like answering a noob here.
I guess we're not worth it.
No wonder this board is dying.

Besides working my ass of I still find time to answer politely to your question. It has nothing to do with being a noob or not. I won't even ask if you allready used the search button.

You NEED to use the HO intake manifold because it's a different head than the lowport. Just swap the sensors and you'll be fine. You can leave away the EGR crap if your state emission laws allow you to.

The board needs more people spouting off and disrespecting others to continue it's decline. Look around theres people with a lot more posts than you getting no response. A simple BTT usually helps get your post attention. I for one have never made the swap and don't want to hand off bad information. At one time there was quite an exchange of ideas here but petty B.S. has seemed to dry it up. Try to not help it along......

I apologize for using harsh wording, it's just sad to see the boards decline. I'm hoping with everyone making positive contributions it will once again be a fast moving board. It's sad when I see my replies are the last ones made on numerous posts.

The newer style manifold is not set up for an EGR. So I'm afraid you need to look for a lowport engine. 1 Plus: they're pretty cheap if you can find one.

Default HO vs Lowport

From the article you sent me to Nix it doesn't sound like
TOO big of a PIA to use the HO intake, but it didn't say
anything about problems with the egr. That, I would consider a MAJOR omission! So you're saying I would be best off getting a lowport head and using my stock intake?
That takes a lot of fun out of it!
Thank you again

The HO engines were designed with a different camtiming tomreduce NOx. But you would need the motormanagementsystem from the HO also to keep the emission within the limits.

The HO sounds magic, but it only has a bit more power at higher RPM's. The old Lowport has a bit more torque at lower RPM's, so you're not about to let go a big improvement. Besides, most '87 - '89 XJ's get rusted out or their manual BA tranies get blown, so there should be plenty of opportunities to get a lowport engine that's still in decent shape. As everybody wants the HO, the lowport should be about half the price.

If you find one, replace the oilfilter's O-rings, put a one piece oilpangasket in it and replace the rearmainseal. Maybe you need to clean the valvecover to make it breathe properly, but that can also be done with the engine in place. Put a new bead of RTV on the head, let it dry for an hour, put on the cover, then screw in the bolts loosely. Next day tighten the bolts, and your new old lowportengine will be leakfree.

Ya know, he may not have an issue if he swaps out the electronics as well....a bit more work but you would get rid of the Renix and the EGR issue would go away.

Smog laws should not be an issue...even in CA, you can put a newer motor in an older car...as long as you keep all of the gear that was attached to the engine. In the case of my CJ, it is now a 93 Chevy PU as far as the smog station is concerned.

Default HO engine swap

Hey Nix, from what you've said I CAN use the block and just go with a pre-HO
head and intake?? I have a line on another head and such IF that's how I can go. (the block is rebuilt already)
I know I'm a PIA but,,,,,,,,,
I truly apreciate your expert help.
