Default transfer case problems

My transfer case slips out of 4l and 2h into 4pt.
Does any one know if there is a detent inside the transfer case? Mine is the one that has 2h,4part time,4h,neutral and 4l in that order and it is in a 94 Cherokee w/4.0 auto.
thanks any help would be great

I am not really understanding what your saying because there is really no way I know of that the transfer case could "slip" out of 4 low and skip by neutral and 4 hi full time (seems to me you have the select trac although I thought that they were 2h, 4h full time, 4 h part time, neutral, 4 low in that order) and even so it wouldnt be able to skip thru neutral from 4 low.

there is a detent, but it's unlikely that's what it is.
sounds like the pads are worn or broken on the shift forks. check the rear output snap ring, they tend to break. i'm betting it's low on oil as well.

It slips out of 2h into 4 part time or it will jump out of 4l. It is hard to shift
Thanks Bama

When the clutch gears in a transmission or transfer case get worn, they pop out of engagement under load. If the nylon pads on the shift forks get worn, the gears don't engage all the way, and pop out. After they pop out a few times, the clutch gears get worn more. Also, sometimes they pop out with so much force that the shift fork gets bent or broken. All these things should be checked if you open the case. The clutch gear teeth (or splines, really) are contoured so when they are fully engaged, they tend to stay engaged, especially under load.

Good luck with this - sounds like $$
