point well taken, Fullsize. I didn't notice the rig's hometown. He would have the room to turn it. That stated, my comments were directed at CP1's query regarding SYE and d-shaft mods.

I kinda like it - as a purpose built vehicle that is. Not everyone is a rock crawler including myself. My only concern would be a d30 with 4:88's and a locker turning 38's! He must be easy on the skinny pedal cause he has got to be reaching the limits of the maximum stress level on that little axle.

I just finished wheelin at Rausch Creek this past w/e. In our group on the trails was a late 80's XJ runnin 33's with major trimming and a 2" BB (spacers in the front and blocks in the rear). No mods to the t-case or d-shaft. We spent 2.5 hours wrenching, jacking and dragging the xj on the trail because the d-shaft all but came out of the t-case tail cone. We spent another 45 mins waiting for a spare u-joint when the needle bearings were lost during removal of the d-shaft...
Get the SYE and a new d-shaft. The shaft will be too short for any real articulation of the rear wheels and it will come out of the t-case. "We" were just lucky the shaft did not damage the tail cone when it came out. That would have been a real bummer.

well, I am hoping to get my 4.5" RC lift (rear spring packs, not add-a-leaf) and have it installed end of next month. I already have the 33's and will be trimming. I was not planning on the SYE and driveshaft at least for a while as I am currently tight on $$. it's an '88. is this a huge deal if I don't go crazy wheeling at first?

At worst a u-joint will bind severely or the yoke will be pulled out of the TC. Moneywise maybe not the worst, but you'll be in the way and someone else has to save you...

Depends on what ya do with it. You can wipe out the transfer case tailshaft if the yoke slips out to far while in use, $$$. at the least you WILL get vibrations that will cause damage in time that will again lead to $$$. If your gonna go 4 1/2", I would strongly suggest and highly recomend you get a SYE and shaft. If your $$$$ challenged, just get your parts your getting now, and set them aside till you can afford the rest (can be a good motivator to see cool parts just collecting dust in the corner) It's not like your jeep is undriveable right now, is it? They didn't get to the moon with half a Saturn 5

I wish they'd totally do away with the stupid slip yoke and just incorporate a slip shaft stock.

CP1, one of the problems with the stock shaft and 4.5" lift is the length of the shaft. It's too short. If you get into a situation where you hang the tail in the air (causing the rear axle to "droop") it will more likely than not slip out of the t-case. It won't take much because IIRC, a replacement shaft is 4" or 5" +/- longer than the stock. With the lift you'll only have a couple inches to play with on the stock rear shaft before it wants to slip out.
I'd do what Kraby suggests.
