Why? To my way of thinking the auto is superior to the manual.

Generally, i think of my Jeeps as "out there" types of vehicles. If you lose one gear or the clutch with a manual, you can keep going. If you lose a valve or torque converter with your automatic, better hope someone knows you're out there.
Aside from, tranny, transfer case, driveshafts, and maybe a mount or two, what else would be on my replacement list?
Would i have to make any computer or vaccum adjustments for ripping out the automatic? And i'm sure i could make something very unappealing to the eye for the center console.

To my knowledge: no. The TCU input on the double TPS can just be disconnected. The tranny is operated only via the TCU. Just disconnect the things.
Before anyone starts talking about the differents: the other way round, from manual to auto, you not only need to replace the TPS with a double one, but also the ECM.

You should always be "out there" with a buddy vehicle in case something major breaks; as you probably know, most off roaders will bend over backwards to help out.
I could see your points about manuals in the case of the Jeep being slanted toward mostly off road use. In the case of the XJ as a multi use/purpose Jeep; I'd still say autos are better. Especially where I live, in the inner, inner city.

i absolutley agree with the buddy idea. unfortunatley i took my CJ to the bottom of Mexico, and am planning for my next XJ to cross the USSR.
Not to say that there aren't buddies to be made, but wouldn't you rather not need to walk to find one. and when you do, how long will it take to find a part for an automatic.
on the other hand, i love the automatic that comes with the XJ, i've never had a problem with it, (including 2 XJs, the continental 49 states, and about 500,000 no-tranny-problem-miles later), but i still just feel a manual is a better choice "out there".

That would be a cool trip to make. I recall that Four Wheeler magazine had a series of articles a few years back featuring a trip across what was then the Soviet Union. I think the vehicle used was an Ford F-250 pick up with a on the bed camper. You should check the articles out if you haven't already.

#1 would be a clutch swing arm #2 would be the hydraulic master for the clutch or fab up a bell crank for a manual clutch.
After that you will need to pick out a tranny that will work for you. most are top loaded and the shifter will be near the roof. If as you say you are looking for "out there tranny's".
Personally I would take the trouble free auto over the persnickety clutch and manual set up any day Oh wait ,, did that already after 8 years of adjusting, burning clutches, and doing the 3 pedal shuffle I wised up and put in an auto .
No troubles now
