Default np231 with tail-shaft out of yj

My bud has one he wants to get rid of. Will this work in my XJ? Is it any different from the NP231 I have? I figured if it will work, it already has the tailshaft conversion and its out the jeep. I can install a 4:1 ration and heavy duty chain. Oh yea, GOOD to be back guys...i missed you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As long as the input spline count is the same as yours. It'll either be 21 or 23. Outside of that they are the same unit. The difference in the spline count is in the years they were made. My 88 had 21 and my 90 had 23 splines. The change was made sowhere in there.

As long as it the same spline count (as noted above) then yes it will work. I swapped in a YJ NP231 earlier this year and the only things you need to address are:

1) Front DS output yoke. They are different, so just use the one off your old case... works perfectly.
2) The linkage "tab" that attaches to the case is also different, again, use the one off your old case and everything should go together like a dream.

Good luck!

I would imagine that the YJ guys buy the same SYE as we do... And since we have determined that the cases are essentially identical -- it should theoretically work. I cant imagine why it wouldnt.

My YJ NP231 came with a SYE, but swapped back to a stock output shafts because I aint ready to run the SYE yet. SOOOOOOO... let us know if for some reason this doesnt work. But again, I really think everything should go together perfect.
