Default Okay, so my XJ doesn\'t like VW Bugs...

Today a VW Bug rode the back of my 88 XJ too close. My XJ didn't like it so it starting throwing things back at the Bug to make it back off. Specifically the rear drive shaft and ujoints. The VW dodged the driveshaft at the last second and was not damaged but I was not so lucky.

Turns out the ujoint straps that hold the ujoint to the yoke on the rear differential let loose and the rear drive shaft smacked against the road and XJ a few times before blowing the Ujoint on the transfercase side.

Total Damage...Cracked tailcone on the xfer case. Enough to make it leak oil. The yoke has stripped threads from the bolt pulling out so I tried to swap it with another I had laying around. When I pulled the yoke off I noticed the pinion gear had alot of play which makes me think it has some serious issues. Obviously the Ujoints are gone and the slip yoke on the xfer case is jammed in there pretty good. I haven't pulled it out because I'm trying to keep it from leaking until I get it put back together.

To get home I just put it in 4wd and used the front wheel drive to get me home.

What a day. Ha.

Yea, I Think I"m just going to pull that thread. Bad part is I just started making a deal with Pyroturtle for him to buy the xfer case out of my 90. Now I need it. This sucks. But the situation was funny as hell. Those who new me weren't surprised. They said if it would happen to anyone it would happen to me.

U-bolts are the least of his probs. He's gonna need a transfer case and perhaps a rear diff. He suspects some probs with the rear pinion and he stripped the bolt there....

yeah, I read the thread on the ubolts swap for the straps... I ordered the ubolts and they were sitting on my front porch the day I blew the ujoints and driveshaft. Turns out I ordered the wrong ubolts though from quadratec. Anybody have the right part number for the ubolts??

I have an extra xfer case and I can get a full dana 35 for $35 at the local yard. I'll be back up an running in about a week. Had to borrow my buddies enduro for my daily driver though.
