Default got a tranny leak, coming from ??

to make a long story short, yesterday i was on my way to do some trail riding. after driving on the highway for about 40min., (65-70) i got off on my exit where i needed to go. after slowing down i saw a huge cloud of smoke come out from underneath my rig. pulled over, checked it out and it was tranmission fluid leaking on the exhaust, and this is the FIRST time its happened like this(no problems before or after). at first it was coming out kinda quick, then as my rig cooled down it slowed up. anyway, did some looking and the leak is coming from inside the bell-housing. i was wondering if anyone has an idea of where the leak could be coming from? i do not know a whole lot about the inside of tranny's. would this be a seal or something up in the tranny? have had the leak for a while, but i thought it was a small rear main seal leak. but now i know i got a tranny leak, and the rear main seal to take care of. just wanted to get some idea of what i'm going to be getting into...

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner. Sounds like your transmission seal is out. Simple fix but tough to get to. Will need to either pull engine or tranny to get to it.

Edit:
Forgot to mention this last time: If you have a rear main seal leak and now you have a tranny seal leak, you may have bigger problems than the seals. Your main bearings may be worn causing your crank to "wallow out" which it what is screwing up your seals. If you drop the tranny (and you have access to a lift?!?! you suck! ) you might want to check that crank out.

Stump is prolly right BUT I would damn sure rule out line leaks and any other place oil or ATF could leak from before tackling that task.
If you have to- I'd pay another visit to your buddy with the lift and snatch the t-case/tranny. Leave the engine in the bay if you can.

looks like i'm going to have to do that! time to make a phone call. before i do i'm going to take the dust shield off the bell-housing and make sure that it's leaking from up inside. and i'll check over all the lines as well.

Thank god i do have access to a lift, lol . i'll be checking all the bearings, and the crank then too. although i really don't expect the leak to be from these, reason being the motor was replaced from my buddy (who i bought it off of, had the blown engine before i bought it) with i believe a 98XJ motor with around 65k on it. i'm still not ruling out the above possibilities though! i'll let you all know what i find out come thursday, of course after i get done Turkey hunting!! Thanks for the suggestions guys! Highly apperciate it!!
