| | Re: Windshield wiper arm swap? [ QUOTE ]
any new information on this topic? Why we have to solve such a huge issue on our own instead of the auto makers doing it on the drawing board is beyond me. I'd still like to have pop-up arms, rather than hitting my blades every time I clean the windshield.

Steve,
Quick answer is "no", I haven't completed this mod yet. The Discovery arms have been sitting in a box for a year.
I did try to modify the existing XJ arms which didn't work. I grinded the stop tabs off the arm which would allow the arm to pivot. However the spring and spring mount were then a problem.
If (or when) I do complete this mod, I'll post what I did.

I haven't tried anything myself. Just obtained a 1998 XJ. still no flip up arms on it either. It has a small lift, so I KNOW I'll have a stretch to hold up and arm and scrap the white stuff off the glass.

| | I've never forgotten this mod. Even 3 years later, I've never heard of anyone who's completed this mod.
Some day I hope to circle back to this mod and find a way to succesfully complete it .

| | .....Nice to hear from old friends......
To be honest, I just use the scrapper to free the blades from the windshield and then just work my way up the glass from there. By the time I get done, the defroster usually has everything loose enough to run the wipers and remove most of the stuff. Pennsylvania requires that all the snow/ice is removed from the vehicle before you can move it, so the defroster has a good amount of time to do its job.
Why are we discussing this??...it's JUNE and 90 degrees outside!!

| | I like to wash my windows every time I gas up. It is far nicer to pull the sponge or squeegee across without catching the wipers.
During the winter, when we expect a storm, we raise the wiper arms so the blades aren't froze to the glass. We don't have to chisel and risk damage to the rubber blade. (guy with a Suby only pulls up the drivers side and he broke the mechanism when he tried to run the wipers when the passenger side was still froze down. DUH!) My defroster wont loosen my blades that fast. With the price of gas, even on the coldest days I wont be letting it have any extra idle time.

So I just lift had hold the wiper out of the way with the other hand. Quote:

| Like I said, I have to remove all the snow and ice from all body surfaces anyway in order to avoid being ticketed here in Pa. The little bit of gas used to warm the XJ up is a lot less than the ticket would be.
Has anybody looked at the possibility of using Liberty or Commander wiper arms/blades to do this mod??

| | I do brush my full body, glass and steel, including the roof. Lights and plates all clear. (The WI law says something to the effect of 90% of the glass must be cleared). Plenty of people dont do anything beyond running the wipers. and maybe slamming the door just a bit harder than usual. They look like igloos on wheels. [they suck]. I dont dawdle but (dont know about this Jeep yet) my other didnt do as much in 10 minutes of idling as half or 3/4 of a mile of actual driving do, especially in sub 0 temps

| | seems like old times with both xjy173 and piaa_nissan under the same thread .
xjy173 - I still remember the first advise you gave me, don't lift your truck until you drive it a year or so and get used to it. Learning from you, I tell others the same thing
piaa_nissan - I think I'm (finally) done with lights. It only took about 6 years (yikes) .
Still gotta get this wiper mod done sometime, but I have a ton of metal mods to finish first .
Hope all is well,
Kent
