Default 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4L engine life expectancy

I was just wondering if anybody knew about how many miles you can put on a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L V6 engine before it starts to fail completely. I was thinking of getting a 98 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 120k miles on it and I need about another 40 to 50 thousand more on it. Any suggestions?

The only to answer that question on any vehical is to see the service history. If the oil was changed every 3000 mi then it could go 300k skip the oil changes then 150k and she is shot.

Ask for service records. Do a carfax on the vehicle. Have a REAL mechanic/tech check it out before purchase. Inline 6's are tough but abuse will kill a tank....... All things considered I was told today by a Jeep tech that the 4.0 HO's can go 250K easy.

just to let u know there has not been a 4.0 v6 in a grand cherokee unless it was swap for i would check it doesn't say ford the 4.0l is pretty durable i have one with 220k and the other with 175k and they are both 89 comanche/cherokee its just to bad that they didn't come with xtend cab. the one with 175k is going to be a 4.6l stroked more power/torque. these engines are originals so if you take care of it.... it will last for a long time

The 4.0 liter motor is a L6 (straight), not a V.
In my 88 Cherokee, I got 230K and broke a rod. my 92 Cherokee has just about 160K and it runs great.

Yeah I concurr 100%. If the maintenance has been/will be regular then I'd say you could get another 100K out of it.

225K on mine, still ran good. Routine maintenance is key. With oil changes every 3000 miles and not a lot of abuse, you can make a Yugo go 200,000 miles.

I have to agree with everyone else. I have a 92 Cherokee 4.0 with 130,000 and it runs great. However, the deal breaker is maintenence. I have not owned a vehicle (77 Ford F150, 89 Dodge Caravan) that I did not get at least 250,000 without major vehicle repairs. Heck, I have a Volvo 240 with 310,000 and it does not use a drop of oil.

If you're just about to buy this Jeep make sure that you're getting a good price because average mileage put on a vehicle is 12,000 to 15,000 a year and this jeep has been driven about 24,000 miles a year. But beside that like the other guys have said as long as it has has good maintainance you should be in good shape. And I assume that you made a mistake because the 4.0 that comes in a Jeep is an inline six cylinder engine not a V-6.
