Default All Wheel Drive Conversion?

I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee that is all wheel drive. I am considering converting it to a select track system. Does anyone know if it is worthwhile and what would be involved?

Thanks for the reply. I've just heard that the "Select-Trak" is the better system in the Grand Cherokee and thought it would be nice to be able to leave the vehicle in 2 wheel drive? Also, I was not sure if I could tow an all-wheel drive Jeep behind my motorhome?

If I were going to tow my Grand Cherokee, I'd have a reciever welded on the front, under the bumper. that way, I could put a hitchmount on the front of the bumper and tow it wherever I wanted to go. Just put the Transfer case selector switch in neutral and the trannie in neutral. It should pull easily this way, just fine.....

All-Wheel Drive vechicals CAN NOT be towed, without removing the drive shafts. Mainly becuase there is no way to take the transfer case out of gear. At least thats the way every AWD I have ever seen works.

To do the conversion you'll need an NV-242 transfer-case, a shifter for it (though I think yours would work), and possibly new driveshafts.

I have an NV-242 for sale for $200 if you're interested. I've swapped some x-cases before and it's not really all that difficult. 8-bolts disconects the driveshafts, 6-bolts disconects the x-case. Disconnect the shifter, the vent hose and the speedo-cable and yank the 'case (some may have other wires and vacuum hoses). Installation of the new 'case is just the reverse of that process.

I would use a 242 or 231(I like the 231s better myself)...One of the main reason to swap out the AWD is b/c the like to blow up with just a few psi diffrences in the tires...That and you get ride of the center viscus diff ...andy
