Executive summary: It works OK. Not for rock crawling.

If you need the interior cargo space in a late XJ, this puppy will carry that full size spare outside and swing away to let the tailgate open up. Not as heavy duty as some of the rock-crawler built-up carriers, but at half the cost, it's stout enough for field work and forest roads. A little bit of clunking over bumps, but not too bad, and no worse than the rest of those concealed XJ squeaks and rattles.

You'll probably have to modify the tailpipe for clearance - I had the muffler shop turn it out 45 degrees to the side, making sure exhaust was blowing down and away from the underside.

Mounting is by an adapter that fastens to the tow receiver and frame. It reduces the departure angle a little, but then again, it isn't intended for major off-road challenges.

It's made to carry OEM size tires, so you'll have to check about your monster wheels. You aren't supposed to carry bikes or gas cans on it either.
