Big ol' chunk of steel??

OK guys, I think I know what it's for but why is that huge chunk of steel hangin' from the rear-end? Also, I'm guessing the big damper at the front of the driveshaft is to smooth things out some....?? Anyone?

Does it look like a rock roller ?? if so I think that is also a vibration damper of some kind. I heard a rumor that the jeep designer responsible knicknamed them donkey balls.
