Default No Rear Brake Lights on 2003/4 2.8 CRD (in UK)

I have a 2004 Jeep Cherokke 2.8l CRD (Diesel) in the UK (actually manufactured in 2003 according to the VIN)(Right Hand Drive) and it appears as though the brake lights don't work (none of them - not even the third high level one). All the other rear lights seem to work OK (tail lights, indicators, rear fog lights).
The circuit diagram looks quite simple but, before I start ripping it apart (or take it to the dealers), is this a fault that is known or anyone experienced before?
The only other fault seems to be a noise when you brake and turn right afterwards (wheel bearing or drive shaft?) - I understand this is a common fault
The vehicle has only covered 1,500 miles or so.
Thanks,
David.
