7.5 R16 tires-what's that in toady's lingo

My friend bought that '77 J20(got it for $1000CDN, I'm jealous) it has 16" rims(not 16.5 as I originally thought). He has to but new tires for it though and I'm not sure what size he should look for. The size on it is 7.50 R16. So what size would be a comparable size? Also what is the largest tire he could fit on it? It has no lift but the springs seem to be in good shape. Also how good are these things off-road? Anything to watch out for?

I have '80 J20 (no lift) with 9.50x16.5. It has been dependable and off-road it does well. The tires that are on it are radials I picked up about 3-1/2, 4 years ago for $100 a pop, and they fill the wheelwells quite nice. One thing to look out for off-road and it is BASIC. These things are NOT CJs. They are very stable because they are big. I even pulled a loaded 16' car-hauler thru the trees and ditches in my back yard with no loss of traction. My only beef is that the bodies rust away into small chunks and are hard to replace.

<font color=purple> 7.50 is just that, a 7.50 - they still make 'em. Closest to that would be a 235/85R16 I'd guess. Although the 235 would be a bit wider. A local tire shop should be able to help out. </font color=purple>
