Default rear spring bushings

Here's a suspension question that I need an answer for. On postal jeeps and 60's/70's wagoneers, the bushing used to mount the fixed end of the leaf spring and the shakle to the frame posts have an steel inner part with serrated ends. Is the point of these ends to keep this part of the bushing from moving by allowing it to "bite" into the frame and the large washer? If so, where is the pivot point? If it is where this inner bushing meets the post, what are the serrations for? Seems to me if this was the case that they would just grind against the frame side of the post. Anyone out there have a clue?

Default Re: rear spring bushings

My 78 Waggie had the same knurled ends on the shackle, not the spring bushing pins. Yes... they are made to 'bite' the frame. The rubber bushings is where the flex comes in....as it twists inside the shackle. It would assist the suspension back to normal positioning after a tweak.

I tried poly bushings with smooth pins and the ride was good but the suspension didn't always like to 'come back'. Plus I do alot of river runs and the poly was shot after 1 year.

Now back to rubber and I like it alot better than poly with no 'SQUEAK!!!!!!' and the suspension is aided by the 'memory' of the shackle... 6000lbs of waggie doesn't hinder the flex on the knurled ends at all. MHO....
