Default transmission swap
is there a good (reason) transmission swap for a 85 GW to have a 4 or 5 speed for fuel economy. Am I temping fate to mess with it.

I know alot of jeeps had an AMC V8 mated to a GM TH400 trans... that being said a 700R4 or 4L60E (they have the same bolt pattern as a TH400) should bolt up... A GM 2004R trans has the same bolt pattern and a higher overdrive ratio (numerically lower) than any other GM trans, but this trans is not well known for its strength. I hope this info helps.....
