Won't start when hot

I just bought a 79 Cherokee with a 360 and edlebrock carb. When cold it starts and runs fine, in hot weather it will starve for gas when you get on it, but is fine after the sun goes down. Additionally, it will not start when the engine is hot, it will only start again when the engine cools for 45min or so. I'm thinking vapor lock, also the stock fuel filter rests on the valve cover, putting the overflow line below the carbs fuel fitting, could the fuel just be going out the overflow before it can get to the carb? If so, why wouldn't it happen all the time?

Sounds like two problems: when you say it starves when "I get on it". sounds like low fuel level in the carb or weak fuel pump or both. Sitting and not starting when hot sounds like vapor lock.
Check pump pressure first, after that work on rerouting fuel lines so they do not "rest" or touch any part of the engine. You can also wrap them with insulation

It was (2) different problems: The coil was bad, when it heated up, the negative side shorted out (no continuity to the posituve side)
The starvation problem was the fuel filter being too low on the engine, the overflow/return port was on top, but was still a few inches below the hose fitting on the carb, basically taking the easier path back to the tank, instead of the carb. I replaced the hose from the fuel pump with a longer one, increasing the arc, pushing the return port above the carb's fitting and it solved the problem. I'm sure if the original hard line was still on it, it wouln't have been an issue.
