Valve rocker setting

Just rebuilt a donor 360 for my CJ 5 and I have some top end ticking which I believe is play in the rockers or it sure sounds like it.Does anyone know what is the recomended procedure for setting adjustable stock rockers in a 360. Getting zero lash is no problem but I'm not sure what the additional turn down on the rocker nuts should be.

Here's how we did it on SBC engines: First we'd get the engine warm, then remove a valve cover. With the engine at a slow idle we'd back off an adjusting nut until it started clicking, then turn it down until the clicking stopped, and then go one turn farther. The engine would bog a little as that valve was held open for a few seconds. After the lifter bled down and the engine returned to normal idle we'd do the next one.

It was messy, with oil splashing all over and dripping onto the floor, but it seemed to work fine. Later a speed equipment company marketed little spring steel clips that went onto the rocker arm over the oil hole. They didn't stop the flow of oil up the pushrod, but kept it from squirting out onto the fenderwell.

I can't say if that's the procedure for the AMC V8, but it should work if you can't get any better advice.

Thanx for the info Jim. That's basically the procedure I used for the initial start up, But I still have the clatering noise. [img]images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] If I go a full turn past zero lash, I get valve floating like you said, but it dosn't go away. I am going to try a half turn rather than a full turn and see what happens.

There is another procedure with the engine shut off.

Bring # 1 cyl. to compression stroke @ TDC (Make sure timing mark on harmonic balancer is @ TDC mark. 0 degress)
Then set valves to zero lash. (turn push rod back and forth while turning down rocker nut until push rod will no longer turn freely- Zero Lash)

With # 1 cyl. @ TDC You can set Intake valves # 1, 2, 5, 7.
Exhuast " # 1, 3, 4, 8.

Turn crank 1 Complete revolution to TDC ( # 6 cyl. )
You can then set Intake # 3, 4, 6, 8.
Exhuast# 2, 5, 6, 7.

For a small block Chev. You turn the rocker nuts down an aditional 3/4 turn after you achieve zero lash. This is suppose to put the lifter pistons in the middle of there stroke.

Again, I'm not sure what the additional turn down should be for AMC 360 rockers?

if they are bridged (stock bridged) then just tighten them to 23ftlbs
