Default Wild time finding a working ignition module !

Hi all!

I have a 1976 Scout II, V-8, 304 cid. It has the stock electronic ignition.

It sudenly stopped running. Checking the IGNITION MODULE, I found it melted the honey-colored potting material. The circuit board in the module failed, generating alot of heat (!)

No problem: Auto Value had a replacement made by STANDARD, made in China. With this new module, the Truck started nicely ... but would not develop power. Latter, a tester at a parts place reveled the new module was faulty. Was their tester bad..? I took it to another shop & they had the same diagnostic tester. They got the same test results: bad at LOW RPM.

Then I buy another module. I test it at a one of the parts houses. They say: bad at LOW RPM.

Today I buy another one. I don't even go to pick it up. I call and they test it for me. They say: bad at LOW RPM.

I wish I was making this up ... four modules from three different parts places. And two of them I never put into my Scout, only had them tested. The two I did install had identical problems: easy start, but no power development.

Three looked to be from the same factory, judging by the font & color of the only thing printed anywhere on the module: a 4 digit number.
The 4th module I did not see, as they shop checked it for me over the phone.

I'm in Calgary. And boy this is quite a mess!!

Any problems with STANDARD made in China parts, anyone??

Default NAPA in Canada sold me junk...

Out of the FIVE bad ignition modules, two were from NAPA in Canada.

There are markings on the NAPA modules that are identical to the STANDARD module sold by another parts house. I am pretty sure they all came from the same Chinese assembly line. You know, the one with NO quality control.

So I've given up & ordered a Pertronix set-up that replaces the Gold ignition module with a sensor that fits under the distributor cap. I hope that works.

Meanwile i'll look for a junk yard ign module to get me back on the road for now, while waiting for the Pertronix to come.
