| | Ignition control module Has anyone ever heard of bypassing the icm. I recently got another scout and it was running fine for awhile. Now Im having trouble getting spark. It will fire up and run for about 5 min. and then it wont start due to lack of spark. If you wait for about 2-3 hours it will start back up again for another 5 min. The original icm is still mounted on the firewall, but not connected. There is a 12v source coming from the ign. to the positive side of the coil and from the negative side of the coil to the distributor. Is this an effective way to wire the engine. Thanks in advance for any help. |

| | It seems someone has replaced the more modern distributor with an older one, with points and a cam. Make sure the point contacts are clean and smooth, and that the point gap is correct (check tune up guide for a '72). If all that is OK, maybe the coil has an intermittent break that opens up with heat. Also, if the coil is made to run with a ballast resistor and doesn't have one, it will burn the points pretty quickly.
I did the opposite, replacing the breaker point ignition on my '72 Scout II with a more modern electronic ignition, which usually needs much less maintenance than the older stuff.
Good luck

If you are running without it at all, you don't need it. Pics would really help. Your points, condenser, coil, resistor are the key points, and all happen to be very cheap. |

| | And while you are in there, stand the coil up. Running a canister type coil on it's side is VERY bad for it. They are ALL designed to be mounted vertically, and there's plenty of room to do so, even in the stock location. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
