What is the biggest tire I can run on a 97 x-cab Z71?

What is the biggest tire I can run on a 97 Z71 with stock wheels and stock suspension? What if I add a 3" body lift--what size can I run?

Re: What is the biggest tire I can run on a 97 x-cab Z71?

Opinions will differ but I think 285/75/16 will fit with little
or no rubbing. A little torsion bar tweak or slight trim should
fix that if they do rub at all. I wouldn't go any wider than the
285/75 on the factory 16x7 rim. I've heard of 305/70/16 fitting on
stock vehicles on stock rims but that might be a little much. I
would guess with a 3" body lift you could probably run a BFG 295/75
or a 34x11.50. IF you went to an after market 16x8 rim you could
could probably go a little wider as well. There's probably a ton
of post on this if you search below. Good luck.

John

The biggest tire you can put on a stock 88-98 is 285/75R16. This is only if you use either the stock rims or a set of 16x7's with the same backspacing as stock. If you use 16x8's, they will be to wide and rub. Mine did before I put the lift on. If you use 16x8's the largest you can use is 265's. Hope this helps.

285's fit no problem. I have seen 305/70's fit w/o rubbing but that guy also had new bushings on his truck. Be warned that the 305's will balloon quite a bit (so do the 285's but not as bad). Only 265's or 31's will fit with wider (or more offset) rims. 32's or 285's will rub. With a 3" body 33x12.5s will fit but you may have to trim a little. If you have 3.42 gears bigger tires will kill performance and fuel economy.

Re: What is the biggest tire I can run on a 97 x-cab Z71?

Hey, bowtiepower00, i have a 90 chevy 1500 z71, 3.42, rear end, tbi, and I have a 2.5 in. skyjacker and 33x12.50's and the didn't hurt my power/gas mileage at all. The only noticable difference is when i tow my trailer but even then it still tows it fine. I would assume a newer vortech would turn the tires even better. The only performance upgrades i have are a k&n filter, and flowmaster exaust.
Just thought i would let you know not trying to start trouble.
Thanks,
Patrick

Re: What is the biggest tire I can run on a 97 x-cab Z71?

Yeah mine's a 93 305TBI w/ Edelbrock TES, no cat, flowmaster dual exhaust, edelbrock (k&n) intake, and MSD ignition wires (full ignition on the way). The bigger tires made a huge difference. Yeah my truck has power, but if I put her in OD (i have a 5-speed) the revs drop so low that I have no power until 70mph . I guarantee that 4:10's would make a world of difference. My engine has to work extra hard to get me up to speed. I guess I just can't get enough horsepower
