Default Are Diesels Smogged???

Do diesels have to be smogged in caliornia? Like a new duramax type truck? Or any new diesels for that matter? And if they are now, what year did they start requiring it?

I don't know about others but I don't need to go through smog tests and I have the 8.1 l. I almost positive that Duramaxs don't need to.

to my knowlage they do not. I believe that it has something to do with all diesel trucks being "commerical" trucks. And to be a commerical truck they must have a cirtin GVRW or they fall under smog laws. Thats why you no longer see new diesel cars in cali.

Up here in Ontario they are. Light duty diesels (under 7600Lbs) have to be smogged every other year but that test is an easy pass. All they do is walk around the truck when its running and if it smokes for more than 30 seconds out of 5 minutes it fails. Now on the heavy duty test which my dually was classed under it went thru a full dyno test just like the gas vehicals have to do up here and the heavy duty's also have to be tested every year. Also up here if your car is exempt from the test if its newer than 3 years or older than 20.

While they might not be "smogged" per say, at least here in Wa st, we have an opacity test, ie how much particulate is released from the exhaust pipe, and a NOx test. Similar to a CO/HC test for a gasser. I believe Ca will have similar, if not more restrictive tests than Wa will.
