The 4L60E is what should be in there now (IIRC). Toss one in and go! Of course, if you have funds and time, throw in a shift kit but it isn't needed. The truck will feel great with a new stock tranny.

I had my 700r4 rebuilt by a local shop and it ran about $1400. They upgraded or replaced everything and installed a Trans-Go shift kit. A shift kit by itself will run under $100 depending on the manufacturer and model. You can install it yourself, but if you're having the shifting problems you are describing you're probably going to need a full rebuild.

Default re trans

Sounds like your TV cable needs adjustment or to be replaced. It connects the trans to the throttle so when you depress the gas peddle it knows when to kick down to passing gear. If cable is old it sometimes sticks in its sheath do to wear & improper lube.
