| | | Getting better fuel mileage I came across some info on acetone and told a buddy of mine about it. He says it seems to give him more power so he figures it should help the fuel mileage if he keeps his foot out of it. Any one else tried this? |

Tried what? Pouring acetone in your gas tank? Bad idea and it doesn't work. It's an internet rumor. Any difference in mpg can be chalked up to inconsistencies, driving conditions, calculation errors/differences, environmental factors and an overall placebo effect.
Acetone is corrosive and will degrade rubber seals and gaskets. You'll be spending time and money replacing those. Kinda defeats the purpose of "saving money" doesn't it?
Don't do it. There is no magic formula or snake oil for better fuel economy. What you get from your truck is what you get. If you want to save money, find alternate ways to get around without driving. Drive less. Get a fuel efficient car. You will not magically increase mpg.

Best fuel saving tips I've ever happened upon have been simply to keep the engine tuned up, tires inflated right and driving smoothly to include timing the traffic lights such that you don't have to stop at them. Driving slower and passing less helps fuel mileage too.
Many other methods help fuel economy by reducing the weight of your wallet so you're not hauling around as much every day.

With a manual trans you can short shift, this only works in combination with slower acceleration. It doesn't help to get it up to 1500 rpm as quick as possible only to grab the next gear and repeat.
I wouldn't go spending a bunch of money on stuff that you think might work. Deal with the stuff that is free, like keeping tires inflated, indexing existing spark plugs instead of replacing them, driving slower and smoother all cost nothing.
When it's time to replace things, that's when you can give something a try. I'm assuming you can get Amsoil products at a good price, but I still wouldn't replace the fluids before their time.
Keep a log of your MPGs and make a note of what you have changed and see if you notice any difference over the next 4-5 tanks.
Just remember that in the end it is still going to be a gas hog. Even a 10% increase will still only get you from 15 MPG to 16.5.

thanks. | Indexing a spark plug will point the open end of the curved tip toward the piston.
