87 CHEVY S10 PICKUP coil voltage

I know buy the book, but I am a samurai guy trying to help a friend with a truck with a donor engine from an s10. He keeps frying coils and we don't know why. I asked on our sami board and someone told me it could need a voltage regulator to bring the 12 volts down to 9 (or something) If they guy who got the engine wiring didn't get it then it could explain all our problems.

So my question is: on an 87 V6 2.8 liter what is the input voltage to the coil?

Any help will be appreciated,

Although i am not 100%, the input voltage should be 12 volts. I don't know why it would be otherwise.

Make sure the alternator's regulator is good. If you are charging the system at 18 volts, your gonna kill coils along with just about everything else.
