kawasaki klf 300 bayou 4x4 electrical

Black wire to voltage regulator is toasted at the regulator connection.
someone told me the stator could be fried. I think that jump starting the machine with our truck may have something to do with all of the above.
machine will not run without jump-pack. Machine will not charge battery.
Any suggestions for testing regulator or stator? Also, small wire to battery ground looks like it got rather warm at one point. thank's for your time and any suggestion. rjh Also the machine is a 1992
