Upsized tires

Generally speaking, you can upgrade the tire size anywhere from 1" to 2" on pretty much any vehicle; some will accomodate a larger size tire. What size tire does the explorer currently have?...do they still use the P225/75 R 15? To calculate the overall diameter do the following:

Multiply the width by the aspect ratio and multiply your answer by 2, then divide by 25.4 and add the rim diameter; this will give you the overall diameter of the tire, or at least get you in the ballpark (very close).

P = Passenger car tire
225 = Tire width
75 = Aspect Ratio
R = Radial Construction
15 = Rim diameter

EXAMPLE : SAY YOU HAVE A P225/75R15 SIZE TIRE, DO THIS:

225 times .75 times 2 divided by 25.4 plus 15, this is what you will get;
225 times .75 = 168.75, 168.75 times 2 = 337.5, 337.5 divided by 2 =13.287402, 13.287402 plus 15 = 28.287402; therefore the overall diameter of the tire is 28.2" - so you can easily add and inch or two if space permits!!.
