Default Factory rear axle options for 2K5 ranger

I own a 2005 ford ranger XLT 4x4. I am not the original owner. The truck is basically a work truck and the only options it has is A/C and chrome bumpers.
The question i have is what were the factory rear axle options. My truck has an 8.8 inch rear end and 4.11 gears front and rear. I was told the only way to get this axle and gear combo was to buy the FX4 or off road package. Is this true? How else would my truck end up with this combo from the factory?
