reverse rotation axles

I've always heard mention of reverse rotation axles and never knew why some were that way. Does it have anything to do with the np205 t-case that is gear driven? Unless it has an idler gear between the drive and driven gears, it seems that the front drive output would be going backwards. Are these things related?

JEEP, it's what's for dinner.

Re: reverse rotation axles

Most front axles on 4x4's are reverse rotation. Both driveshafts rotate in the same direction. If you used a normal rotation rear in the front, it would be like doing 55MPH down the road in reverse and the rear wouldn't last that long.

I think they are called reverse cut gears....but I'm not sure.

Re: reverse rotation axles

Some people put reverse cut gears in their rear to get the pinion gear higher up in the dif. This is BAD! For the same reason we want reverse cut gears on the front, we don't want them in the rear. One would always be putting power to the coast side of the gears and chewing em up.
