That's funny... I was actually thinking about having my own cam ground. Comp Cams will grind to your profile for the same price as their off-the-shelf camshafts. So, if you wanted the camshaft that I orginally used as my bench mark, it's available.

| | Re: Camshaft Profiles for the 22R Would you be into manipulating the numbers of the CC252S (2002) to see if you can get the later torque numbers up? It obviously has the first half of that RPM range whooped!
Or do you think it's an early or late kind of thing? |

Yes, you are right, it produces some very impressive off-idle to 3200 RPM numbers-which I think are about 90% of my driving RPM. I think I can come up with a cam profile that will be give me what I want out of a $173 "bolt-in" camshaft. Whether it works or not is another question!! I need to study this more. | | Re: Camshaft Profiles for the 22R How accurate do you think the software is? Good enough to order your custom grind from? Maybe we can get a donation together so you can order the first Gnarly spec cam and test it out in you purdy white ride? Then if it is good, we can all call and order our own Gnarly cams!!! |

| | Re: Camshaft Profiles for the 22R I dont know enough about cams to be able to decide which one I want by technical numbers i feel left out. haha.
I know that I can relate...99% of my driving is off idle to 3200 rpm or so. I rarely go over that except passing on the freeway, which is almost impossible with 33's, 4.10s and a worn out 200K old 22r. Needs a rebuild and cam!
Ive got a question for you smart guys:
Is getting a ported head and bigger valves worth the extra money? Im starting to save up for a rebuild and upgrades for my motor. I like saving gas, and I figure new stock size valves will give me plenty more power than I have now..so I will most likely go with stock. But if the ported valves give a huge performance boost thats REALLY worth it, I may consider it. Benefits/downfalls?
THANKS GUYS! |

That is an excellent question. I think depends on who is doing the porting and valve work. Porting will help flow in the stock "stuffy" 22 heads, and that should improve throttle response. Bigger valves will usually slightly effect lower RPM torque, but improve mid to upper RPM performance.

Well, "like saving gas" and head porting and bigger valves won't compute. If you increase flow you will probably increase "power" that will most likely use more fuel. The stock valves will help keep lower end torque. Ted's headwork is probably very good. I like TCR's ported heads, and he'll tell you what they flow - before and after porting!! I've touched them and Tim definitely knows what he's doing on a Toy engine. That's just my worthless opinion.

| | Re: Camshaft Profiles for the 22R Your "worthless" opinions are worth a thousand bucks to me..literally! Ill stick with stock then and satisfy my lowend cravings and save my money. Anything over 3500RPM is just wasting gas and making noise, to me atleast. Over 3500rpm feels like my truck is going to explode. After about 220K+ I dont trust the high rpms very much.
Ill ask Ted about what I need for a head rebuild.
Thanks a lot for the info gnarly...its really helpful to have info from people who have more experience than me with this stuff. I cannot wait to get the money for a rebuild and cam!
Im trying to keep up on your cam studies. Is there a page I can read about them and learn some terms and more about how they work? I know what they do and how they operate, but I dont know the science behind it. Id really like to know! I want to pick the best possible cam for my adventerous driving. Torque under 3500rpm is what I need. Afterall, its a daily driver/rock crawler/trail eater. haha.

Well, if you are referring to the valves, to give you an example, when I spoke to Tim at TCR, in his 2.6L stoker, he ports the head and still uses the stock size valves.

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, there lots of really good sites that explain how a camshaft works. Just do a google search on camshafts, Crane cams, Comp Cams, etc, etc. you could spend weeks reading up on it.
