UPDATE: OK, I got the 5MG AFM installed and the trucks runs AWESOME! No more RPM lag off idle~3000rpm, this is the range you will notice the most. The inlet sides of the 5MG AFM are wider than the 7M and 22re inlets so I had a hard time fitting it to the stock air box, but it's still very possible. OK this should clear up the thread a bit, here is how to Mod the 5MG AFM to work on your stock 22re Box.
First thing is first, get an AFM from a Supra with a 5MG inline six. Shouldn't have to be 1982 as long as it's got 5MG, the part number should be this (taken from begining of thread)
Next thing you want to do is stop by a hardware store and visit the plumbing/PVC isle. Get a 3" to 2" rubber adapter for about $5~$7
Your stock AFM on top of the box should look like this.

and when removed like this
So your 5MG adapter should look something like this with the 3" tube on both sides.
Problem is our box is flat and won't adapt. So what you are going to do is extract these 4 philips head screws (I had to use an impact screwdriver so good luck!) When you are done the adapter you remove looks like this and you can discard it unless you plan to use it later for another mod (like a 3" snorkel!)
Here is your 5MG AFM now with out the adapter.
Now you need to remove the old AFM from the box cover if you haven't done so yet. You will re-use the mounting hardware in this stage so try not to damage it. What you want to do is double up the nuts together and use the back nut to extract your mounting studs from the old AFM so you can use them in the new one, flip one nut around so you don't damage the washer on it like this
Next is the faint hearted part: the 7MG AFM does bolt straight to our boxes but the electronics didn't work, so theory has it you could take the 5MG AFM electronics and put them into a 7MG AFM box but that could cause issues if you screw up the spring tension. Plus who has money to waste on two AFM's when you only really need one...
So here is my solution, the 5MG AFM has the bottom studs too low, so what we will do is just drill and tap new holes right above the old ones right here
and again here is a shot, you want the holes where I put my wrenches, to line it up better you can mate it with the old AFM and mark the holes with a center punch before you drill away...or simply place the 22re rubber gasket on the 5m afm and center punch to align the holes...UPDATE: My holes were very close to the top edge of the flat surface, when eye balling the two afm's I almost thought the hole wouldn't fit. It was close but I was sucessful and used a 10mm tap to make some threads for the studs.
If you did it correctly you should be able to install your four extracted studs on the new 5MG AFM, two top ones in the stock location and the bottom ones in the raised location.
Next take your Box lid and you need to hammer the ribs down a little, each rib is where my fingers are and you need to hammer along the middle towards the flange maybe 1/8-1/4" on each rib, not too much...This will let the AFM fit smoothly onto the flange with no obstruction. UPDATE: This is not entirely true...It did have to ream out the mounting holes on the AFM box directly above both the uppers and lowers. If I take it apart again I will get more photos. Basically I drilled a pilot hole above each mounting hole then just upsized bits until the two holes became one. Then I used a rat-tail file to make it like an oval shape hole...If you are careful with this step you could still reuse the box with the 22re AFM later if you need to. This wasn't very serious compared to taking a drill to the AFM

When it was all said and done I used the supra rubber gasket, supra 5mg AFM and the 22re box. Works great!!!
So with all that said, go ahead and mount your new 5MG afm to the stock box. You will notice a slight gap on the top where the gasket meets the AFM, I will use clear silicone to seal that section up on mine, you can use whatever you want, the gap is very small. If you were crafty with your holes you drilled the supra rubber gasket might line right up, I will use clear silicone to be on the safe side.
Now go ahead and throw it all together and you good to go! Enjoy the new low end power of a 3" AFM on your stock box...For future mod's I suggest widening the tubing from the stock box to the throttle body, and installing a stock replacement K&N in the filter box. With this mod performed you will find there is no need to put swiss cheese holes in the bottom of your box for more air! By preventing this and not using the external style filters you can reduce chances of sucking up water into your engine. You can even adapt this mod to use a snorkel hooked to the stock box and have twice as much fun! Enjoy!
