Default need advice on which cam to use

Hi all,
I am building a 2180 motor with Street eliminator heads, 48 IDA Webers, C/R about 10:1 I have already bought Autocraft 1.4 ratio rockers so I must stay with a ratio grind cam, I was thinking of using the Engle FK10, The motor will be used in my 4 seater play buggy, dont want something too radical, but yet I still wanna go fast!! It has to have a good mid range power band, not all top end, and ideas on what may work the best??? post any replies here.
Thanks
Sandmitch

Cam specs for the Engle FK10 are:
Advertised Duration = 310 degrees
Duration @ .050" lift = 266 degrees
Lift @ cam = .385" (remember 1.4 ratio makes this actually .539" lift)
108 degrees lobe center
Let me know what you think
Thanks

Hi Mitch,
That's a rad cam lift. Are you having dual carbs or single?

that's alot of duration. i personally like to have alot of bottom end grunt and i would probably go with something with less duration, but i haven't built a sand only buggy, i know that they need to scream. i would call engle and explain to them what you are building and what you are going to do with it. they would be experts on what cam to use. what are you building for the rest of the engine? heads, intake? we need a good discussion of engines here.

The heads are Street Eliminators 44x37.5 valves, dual springs, chromoly retainers, will match port to the intakes and exhaust, probably clean up the casting flash while Im at it, also will probably blend the combustion chambers since there appears to be some sharp areas around the spark plugs, thats about all I plan on doing to the heads. Thr rest of the engine: Forged 82mm crank, stroker type VW rods, case is dual relief, Cima forged 92mm pistions with teflon buttons, Melling oil pump, full flow of course, Dual 48 IDA's on ?? intakes, Holley red pump with Mallory return style regulator, 009 Dist with a comp-u-fire module, wanting to run a MSD 6A box not sure if this will work with the Comp-u-fire module, Not sure on the cam, lifters, pushrods yet, still trying to decide....
Thanks for the help
Mitch

Heya Mitch,

Air-cooled VW's like cam timing. Stroker cranks will improve on low end performance as well, so even more aggressive cam timing can be run without killing your low end. Also, dual carbs will run much smoother than a single carb setup. The familiar rough idle characteristic of a healthy cam is caused by reversion pulses traveling back up into the intake (int opens BTDC, ex closes ATDC). With a single intake your dealing with reversion pulses from all 4 cyls. With port on port induction your only dealing with reversion from 1 cylinder per intake port, so the engine will run much smoother (less low speed intake contamination).
Given your 1.67:1 rod ratio, 10:1 compression, the Eliminator's valve sizes and port volumes, the FK-10 will give you a very strong mid range with good top end. Provided you have a light to moderate weight buggy, and lower gearing, you won't suffer much on the bottom end. The FK-10 / Dual 48's will give you a mean idle without being so slobbery that it kills low speed driveability. If your concerned at all with low rpm lugging, drop back to the FK-8 to regain some low rpm peak cylinder pressure (298adv / .266@.050 vs 310adv / 266@.050).
Let us know the final outcome.

Wayne,
Thanks for the input, Ill have to figure my gear ratios for the tranny I have, Im not sure just exactly whats it got for graring, but Im sure before this whole project is over I will have to take it apart and find out. The paddles I will be using are STU pro series SR-1 right at 31" tall and about the same width as 13 paddles. Hopefully the 4 seater wont be too heavy, I will keep everybody posted on how it comes out, but it will probably be a while before I get to actually start building it, check my progress by clicking on "projects" from the main page, from there you can see that Ive got a ton of work ahead of me.
Thanks again for the help
Mitch
