2.5 liter mitsu engine

Hello,
I'm new to the forum. I like in Okinawa Japan and am an avid off-road enthusiast. I have a '93 Mitsu Pajero, with the 2.5 L4 turbo intercooled diesel. I think the diesel is a little bit sluggish, I used to work on cars before I joined the military, so I have a general idea of how most of the stuff works on cars, but not a lot of experience with diesel engines. I was wondering how I could get some more umph out of this engine. If anyone has any ideas I'd greatly appreciate the help.
