Our writer Rick Sosebee, a friend of the Penland family, informed us last night that 26 year-old ATV racer Hoyt Penland, son of Mike Penland, died last night (July 23, 2009). Cause of death is still under investigation. No, it was not an ATV- or race-related incident.

We've covered Hoyt's action-filled racing adventures, including his very serious incident at the SCORE Baja 1000 in 2007 that left him with multiple compound fractures in his right leg, and drama just to get out of the country and back to solid medical care. He was still recovering from that injury.

We have had several great conversations with Mike through the years, about that event and others. He's a wonderful ambassador for the sport, and his family was involved and supportive. In a conversation with his daughter Chrissy in 2007, talking about why Hoyt and Mike do what they do in Baja, she simply said ,

"I have NO idea why they do what they do, but I do know they love the adventure of racing!"

Our thoughts and prayers are with them all, and we'll let you know when we hear any further details.
